The Do’s and Don’ts of Rebonded Hair in Summertime

Many Filipinas aspire to have long, straight, soft, and silky hair. With the many different salon treatments available, achieving this kind of hair is possible. However, it takes quite a bit of investment and a whole lot of maintenance, especially when summertime rolls in.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Rebonded Hair in Summertime - HairMNL

Rebonding, a popular hair straightening treatment, is an elaborate process that uses chemicals and heat to permanently change the structure of the hair, making it more susceptible to damage. It is one of the most high-maintenance salon procedures for aftercare, and this is especially so during the hot, sweaty season.

Learn more about how you can enjoy your rebonded hair this summer without damaging it in the process with these do’s and don’ts.

✗ DON'T tie your hair too tight.

The rising temperatures will make you want to put your hair up to cool the neck. We recommend avoiding it altogether, especially on newly rebonded hair. If it is essentail to do so, make sure to tie it loosely or use a soft, silk scrunchie to avoid putting too much stress on it. Otherwise, tying your hair too tight can leave a kink or a crease on the hair, making it look unsightly.

✔ DO maintain your hair by regularly moisturizing it and protecting it from heat.

The key to styling rebonded hair is to use products that help prevent it from further exposure to damage. Whether it’s from using heat styling tools (which we don’t recommend on rebonded hair) or due to environmental factors, like the sun’s UV rays, make sure that you use hair care products that provide extra moisture, nourishment, and protection, such as hair oils and serums, hair masks, or leave-in conditioner and treatments. Depending on your hair type, you may opt for products with thicker formulation, as this will maximize hair protection and prevent your hair cuticles from being damaged.

DON'T swim in the ocean or chlorinated pool.

Chlorine will damage your hair cuticle due to the chemical reaction. The same goes for seawater, as the salinity of the ocean water may cause dryness and dullness of your hair. This will not only ruin your rebonded hair but also put more damage and stress on it. But if it can’t be avoided…

DO wear a swimming cap.

If you have undergone the treatment recently (in less than three or so months), and cannot resist diving into the pool or the ocean, wear a swimming cap to protect your locks and keep them dry. Another option for extra protection is to use a leave-in conditioner or a hair mask before swimming.

DON'T use hot water when showering.

We understand how relaxing a hot shower can be after a long day, but you may want to put it off if you want to maintain your rebonded hair longer. Hot water opens up the cuticles and makes already fragile hair from rebonding even more vulnerable. Instead…

DO wash hair with lukewarm or better yet cold water.

Use cold or, at the very least, lukewarm water. Using cold water helps seal the cuticles and prevents further damage. The cold water will feel refreshing, too, after your fun under the sun!

✗ DON'T skip hair care.

While you’re on vacation, your hair and scalp are still working overtime, so please don’t ignore them. No matter how busy you are with traveling, we highly encourage you to take good care of your hair, rebonded or not.

✔ DO use haircare made for your chemically-treated hair.

Rebonded hair tends to feel dry and limp after a while, which is why it’s important to invest in the right products to help maintain it. Make sure that to cleanse and condition with products that help keep your hair deeply nourished. Here are some of the best professional hair care products for rebonded hair:
