From hacks to routines, Tiktok is a powerhouse for different types of content, including hair DIYs. Recently, we’ve been seeing the Rice Water trend on Tiktok, and you might’ve come across this one too! With rice being a staple in many homes, it’s no surprise how this trend is making waves all over the world with how easy it is to make and use. Read on below to know more about this hair hack.
WHAT IS RICE WATER?
Just as rice is pretty much a staple to all Filipino meals due to the nutrition it provides, rice water contains good things for your hair, such as vitamins, antioxidants, amino acids and minerals. Rice water also has a carbohydrate known as inositol, which helps your hair stay strong and prevent breakage. Through these ingredients, your scalp gets a dose of nourishment it needs to keep your strands strong and healthy.
HOW TO MAKE AND USE RICE WATER?
Making rice water is pretty much close to making rice for meals. Here’s how:
- Wash the rice and pour out the water to remove any dirt from your mixture.
- Once rinsed, soak the rice in a bowl and mix it until the grains aren’t too visible, hidden by the cloudy water.
- Strain the water from the rice and place it in a container convenient for you. It could be an old jar or an old hair care product container. Optional: You can drop a few citrus peels and essential oil if you’d like. Boil it to have the scent infused together.
- Let the rice water sit in the container for a maximum of 24 hours at room temperature. Allowing it to sit brings out all the ingredients you want to get from the mixture.
- Now, you can use the rice water. Soak your hair generously with the rice water. You can do it either before or after you’ve cleansed and conditioned your hair. You can focus the mixture on your scalp. Let the rice water sit in for up to 20 minutes and wash it all off.
- After using it in the shower, make sure to place it in the fridge. Store it for a maximum of 7 days.

How often should you use this? You can use it once a week or once every few weeks, depending on your hair porosity. Hair with low porosity can break easily and feel dry if it gets too much protein, so using too much of the rice water might do more harm than good to your tresses. If you aren’t too sure what your hair porosity is, try the water test.
