Hair Training is Going Viral on TikTok: Is it Worth the Hype?

Washing our hair on a daily basis has been a part of our routine, but it could sometimes feel like a chore. So, I’m sure there must have been a day when you didn’t wash your hair… doesn’t seem and look so bad, right? But when you skip two days or more of not washing your hair, then you must have noticed that your hair has gone a lot greasier. In case you didn’t know, skipping hair wash days is actually a thing that a lot of people do – it’s called “Hair Training” and it’s all over TikTok! Keep reading to learn more about Hair Training and what it does to your hair.

What is Hair Training?

Hair Training is a process people do where they don’t wash their hair for as short as 4 days or as long as 30 days (possibly even longer than that)! The purpose of Hair Training is to literally train your scalp and hair to get used to not being washed every single day. This, in theory, trains them to produce less oil and adjust to fewer washes.

Is Hair Training effective?

A lot of people have been trying this process to lessen their hair wash days and to save great amounts of hair care products without worrying about greasy locks. It is effective for some but is not for most others, mainly because Hair Training isn’t suitable for their hair type.

What is important to remember is that Hair Training is definitely not suitable for some hair and scalp types, such as dandruff-prone or oily scalps. It can only lead to creating more scalp build-up which may only make your scalp feel worse than it already is!

What’s a great alternative for Hair Training?

Rather than doing Hair Training, hair experts recommend using gentle hair products on a regular basis instead. Why? Our scalp produces oils and sweat while accumulating skin cells and dirt from pollution that needs to be regularly washed away. So, washing your hair regularly with gentle products is much more effective and practical than Hair Training. After all, 30 days is too long to go by without washing your hair, especially if you live in or go around a smokey or polluted area.

You might be wondering: What gentle hair products can you use? For starters, it would be great to use sulfate-free shampoos. Sulfates are harsh ingredients that will only dry out your scalp causing it to produce more oil to compensate for its dryness. So, with the help of sulfate-free shampoos, you can cleanse your scalp and hair from impurities while making sure that your scalp wouldn’t have to produce more oil than it should.
