What are Purple Toning Products?
Purple toning products come in different forms – shampoos, conditioners, and hair masks! They are at-home treatments with purple or violet pigments that help cancel out the yellow tones that would sooner or later show up on your bleached hair. Why purple pigments? It’s all about the color theory wherein the colors opposite each other on the color wheel cancel each other out. So, since purple sits across yellow, then the purple pigments of your toning products will cancel out the yellow pigments of your blonde hair!

What’s the Right Way of Using Purple Toning Products?
Purple toning products are not all the same and there are various ways to use them correctly – it just really depends on the current state of your blonde hair and the products you’re using! But, in general, purple toning products do not replace your regular shampoo. They are meant to be used only when your blonde hair has visible brassy tones. Plus, it’s important to stick to the usage instructions of the purple-toning products you have!
Not sure what purple toning products to use and how to use them? Well, from mildly pigmented purple toning products to heavily pigmented ones, we’re sharing with you our product recommendations and how to use them the right way:
Heavily Pigmented Purple Toning Products
Since these products have darker pigments of purple or violet, it’s recommended to use them only once or twice a week, as long as there are visible tones of yellow on your strands. Overusing these heavily pigmented products may leave your hair looking duller and darker.
The Kérastase Blond Absolu Anti-Brass Ritual (₱ 6,850) provides fiber care and immediate anti-brass action to achieve ideal blonding ash hair color. Leave the shampoo in for 2 to 5 minutes, the mask for 5 minutes (or 10 minutes for stronger neutralization), and the serum overnight or as a finishing product after styling.
For a quicker routine, then the L'Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Silver Anti-Brass Duo (₱ 1,800) is for you. On wet hair, evenly apply and lather the shampoo. Leave it on for 2 to 5 minutes and rinse it off right after. Follow it up with the conditioner where you leave it on for 2 to 5 minutes and then rinse it off for an enhanced and shinier blonde shade.
For a vegan routine, try out the AVEDA Blonde Revival Shampoo (₱ 1,800) and Conditioner (₱ 1,900) . Apply the shampoo to wet hair and leave it in for 1 to 3 minutes, depending on the desired amount of neutralizing. Make sure to rinse it off thoroughly, then start applying the conditioner to your hair. Leave it in for 1 to 3 minutes as well, then rinse it off.
Mildly Pigmented Purple Toning Products
Since these products have milder pigments of purple or violet, you can use them every day or every other day, as long as there are visible tones of yellow on your strands. Just make sure that you don’t overuse them and leave them in on your hair longer than instructed!
The Davines Alchemic Silver Shampoo & Conditioner (₱ 2,900) is a sulfate-free and paraben-free duo that intensifies and illuminates platinum and cool blonde tones. Leave the shampoo in for 5 minutes, and the conditioner for 10 to 20 minutes. Or you could use the Wella Professionals Color Fresh Mask in the shade Pearl Blonde (₱ 1,199) ! A treatment to be left on for 10 minutes (or 20 minutes for additional intensity) and then washed off right after for visible and brighter results.

What Happens When You Use Purple Toning Products the Wrong Way?
Darkens Your Blonde Shade
Eliminating too much yellow from overusing purple toning products can leave your blonde hair looking darker than it should be, which is a look that you might not be going for. This is because the purple pigment can build up on your hair, essentially dulling down your blonde shade.
Makes Your Bleached Hair More Brittle and Dull
Purple toning products are primarily meant to color correct, not nourish and repair bleached hair. So that’s why these products can be drying to the hair, especially if overused or left on for too long! When used incorrectly, your hair will have a lot of buildup which would ultimately make your overprocessed hair more brittle.
And there you have it! As long as you follow the usage instructions of our professional products for purple toning, your blonde shade should remain the same for as long as it could.
