Hair Science: How Hair Loses Luminosity
June 01, 2019Several causes could be to blame for dulling your hair’s natural shine—most of which create a state of dehydration. And although not all of these causes can be controlled, you can counteract the effects. Before devising your approach to better hair health, however, let’s take a look at 3 common reasons dull hair happens.
Reason 1: The Long, Hot Shower.
Lingering in a steamy shower is luxurious, but not so much for your hair. The longer your strands endure piping hot water, the more dehydrated (and less luminous) they become.
Tip: Try to minimize the length of your shower and keep the temperature lukewarm.
Reason 2: Mineral Buildup
If you have hard water where you live, long, frequent showers can lead to mineral buildup in your hair, resulting in stiffness, breakage and dullness. Not fun. Swimmers take note: Salt and chlorine exposure can dull your shine as well.
Tip: Before you shower or swim, pretreat your strands with an oil or masque. This will help form a barrier between minerals and your hair.
Reason 3: Oméga Depletion
A diet deficient in healthy fats is an enemy of shiny hair. Omega-3 fatty acids are needed to build cell membranes in the skin of your scalp and maintain the natural oil that keeps your locks lustrous.
Tip: Blend some flax or chia seeds into your morning smoothie and take an omega-3 supplement.
